introduction

Before every painting, there is a long walk.

Mária does not begin with a canvas. She begins outside, on paths she has walked a thousand times — through meadows, along woodland trails, into the quiet of the forest.

She carries nothing but attention.

For decades she tended her garden, gathered wild herbs, and watched the seasons shift across the wooded hills, meadows and quiet valleys of the Bükk in Northern Hungary.

She painted what she saw not simply to capture it, but to understand it. Each small canvas is a form of listening.

She never sought galleries or collectors. The paintings accumulated quietly at home — stacked away, leaning against walls, waiting without expectation — because the act of seeing and painting was always enough.

Now, at eighty-two, she has agreed to let them go — each one to a single home, where someone who has never walked her paths might nonetheless recognise something true in them.

“She wasn’t searching for recognition. She painted forests, rivers, hillsides and changing seasons simply because this landscape was her home.”

A Lifetime of Seeing

A Lifetime of Seeing

The wooded

The wooded hills of the Bükk rise and fall across Northern Hungary, opening into quiet valleys, meadows and streams beneath the trees. It is a landscape transformed by every season — from bare winter branches and lingering snow to the deep greens of summer and the warm, rust-coloured forests of autumn.

Mária has watched this landscape for eight decades. She knows its moods the way one knows a person — the particular grey of November rain, the first green of April, the silence that settles after snowfall.

These paintings are not postcards. They are the accumulated attention of a life spent in one place, with eyes open and no agenda beyond seeing clearly.

WHY NOW

Some things are worth waiting for.

For most of her life, the question of who might see Mária’s paintings never really mattered. The work was its own reason.

What changed was not ambition, but age.

At eighty-two, she looked at the canvases accumulated over decades and began to imagine them somewhere else — in rooms she had never seen, with people she had never met.

Each painting had been created quietly and without an audience. Perhaps now it was time for them to leave home.

Pannonaris exists to make that journey possible — to bring her work beyond the place where it was created and into homes where it can begin a new story.

Remarkable artists don’t only exist in major cities.

Sometimes they live far from galleries. Sometimes they spend decades creating without thinking about an audience. Sometimes extraordinary work waits quietly in ordinary homes.

We believe art does not require a gallery to matter. It requires an artist who means it — and someone willing to stop, look, and recognise something in it.

Pannonaris exists to close the distance between artists who work quietly and the people who might find something deeply familiar in their work, no matter how far apart they live.

Our Beginning

Pannonaris begins here.

With one artist, one landscape, and a lifetime of paintings that were never made for an audience.

Mária’s story is the first we have the privilege to tell.

In time, we hope to find others — artists who have worked quietly, far from galleries and recognition, whose work deserves to travel beyond the place where it was made.

For now, this is where the story begins.
