Memories of the Stone

Enclosed by steep rock faces and dense woodland, Memories of the Stone reveals a secluded landscape shaped by time. The cool stillness of the water contrasts with the rugged cliffs above, where layers of violet, ochre, grey and deep green form a richly textured surface.

Yet the painting seems to hold more than the image of a quarry lake. The exposed stone bears the silent traces of everything that has passed before it—changing seasons, shifting light and the gradual transformation of the land. Its fractured surfaces appear almost like fragments of memory: partly visible, partly concealed beneath shadow and vegetation.

Through expressive, tactile brushwork, Mária Bodrogi invites us to see the landscape not as something motionless, but as a living archive. While the water reflects only the present moment, the stone seems to remember what the eye can no longer see. The painting becomes a quiet meditation on time, permanence and the marks left behind by both nature and human presence.
