A Life Among Gardens, Forests and Paintings

2026. 09. 23.

For Bodrogi Mária, painting has never been separate from everyday life. It grew from decades of looking closely - from garden paths, changing skies, forest clearings and the quiet persistence of memory.

In Mária’s life, painting is not separate from everything else.

On some mornings, she goes out to the family plot to tend the vegetables and fruit trees. There is always something that needs attention: watering, pruning, gathering what has ripened, or simply checking what has changed since her last visit.

On other days, she takes a long walk through the forest. When the season is right, she looks for mushrooms beneath the trees, moving slowly and watching the ground. She knows that finding them requires patience — and a willingness to notice what others might walk past.

There is time for friendship, too. An afternoon spent talking with women she has known for years, sharing news, memories and the small events of ordinary life.

And then, sometimes, she paints.

Not according to a strict schedule, and not because a painting has to be finished. She returns to the canvas when she feels drawn to it. The colours and impressions gathered throughout the day — the green of the garden, the shadow beneath the trees, the warm tones of late summer — may find their way into the work.

Painting belongs naturally among these other activities. It is part of the same life: looking after living things, walking through familiar places, spending time with people, and noticing the world as it changes.

For Mária, inspiration is not something distant that has to be searched for.

It is already there, in the garden, among the trees, around the table with friends — and in the quiet moment when she picks up a brush.
